REALTOR - Real Estate Agent - What's the Difference? Most people use the terms real estate agent and REALTOR interchangeably, but there is an important distinction. All REALTORS are real estate agents; but not all real estate agents are REALTORS. Most states (Indiana included) require that anyone wanting to become a real estate agent must complete certain classes, pass an exam and obtain a license from the state. Once an agent becomes licensed, if they want to become a REALTOR, they must apply for membership through the local Board of REALTORS. Once the application is approved, the new member must take a class to become familiar with the duties, responsibilities and benefits of the title of REALTOR. The member must abide by a strict code of ethics, which in essence, is based on the Golden Rule, with a major emphasis on ethical behavior. REALTORS are governed by both state license laws and the REALTOR Associations at the local, state and national level. Non-REALTORS are governed by state license law only. In addition to the major emphasis on ethical behavior, membership gives REALTORS® the opportunity to affect important industry issues:
REALTORS continuously strive to become and remain informed on issues affecting real estate and to maintain and improve the standards of the industry and to take responsibility for our integrity and honor. The term REALTOR connotes competency, fairness and integrity resulting from adherence to a high ideal of moral conduct in business relations. Check the links below for more information:
